    Start with the trip, not the hardware

    Before you pick a van or buy a single component, answer these essential questions:

    Trip Planning

    • • Where are you going? UK weekends, Alps winters, Morocco deserts?
    • • How long off-grid between stops? 24–48 hrs, 1 week, 2+ weeks?
    • • Who's travelling? Solo, couple, family, dog(s)?

    Payload & Space

    • • What's the payload? Bikes, boards, skis, tools, photography kit?
    • • What must fit inside? Ski length, bike wheelbase, board bags?
    • • How do you like to live? Cook inside/out, fixed/convertible bed?

    Choosing a base vehicle

    Mercedes Sprinter / VW Crafter

    Great drivetrains, tall roof, 4x4 options, excellent aftermarket support

    Ford Transit

    Strong UK support, parts availability, good value, AWD options

    Fiat/Peugeot/Citroën

    Square interior, great space efficiency, FWD traction trade-offs

    Tip: Decide your maximum external height early (ferries, car parks, trees) and your internal standing height target. Those two fight each other.

    Weight, payload & legality (the silent project killer)

    This is where most DIY builds go wrong.

    Critical Rules

    • • Know your Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and axle limits
    • • Weigh as you go: empty, insulated, furnished, fully loaded
    • • Heavy items low and between axles
    • • Check licence categories and insurance requirements

    Layout & ergonomics

    Liveability beats Pinterest. Focus on flow, work triangle, and daily usability.

    Power system

    DC first; AC sparingly. Size for worst-case winter days, not summer dreams.

    • • Audit loads: fridge, fans, lights (efficient DC)
    • • LiFePO₄ batteries for weight + capacity
    • • Charging mix: alternator + solar + shore

    Heating & ventilation

    Diesel air heaters are efficient. Proper ventilation beats extra insulation.

    • • Safe intake/exhaust positioning
    • • Hot water: diesel, LPG, or electric
    • • CO & LPG sensors non-negotiable

    Gas & cooking

    Respect the risk. If any feels fuzzy, bring in a qualified gas engineer.

    • • Sealed, vented locker with correct regulators
    • • Rigid pipework and pressure testing
    • • Keep ignition sources away from gas sinks
